The Board of Elections met yesterday about the proposed elimination of the on-campus early voting site (because Morehead Planetarium is not available this fall). UNC Vice Provost Steve Allred was there to speak on this matter, as were the president of the Graduate and Professional Student Federation, and representative of Vote Carolina and I. All of us uniformly agreed that the Franklin Street Post Office would be a reasonable compromise (given that the Planetarium was out of the picture).
The N&O reports: “Community members, led by Carrboro Mayor Mark Chilton, and university representatives, led by Carolina North Executive Director Jack Evans, agreed that the proposed research campus should not exacerbate the affordable housing problem in Chapel Hill and Carrboro . . .”
The university envisions its proposed Carolina North research campus as a beacon of learning and research, , but the university’s thinking on the subject sometimes fails to appreciate how important quality-of-life issues will be in drawing good people to Carolina North . . .
Congratulations to Mark for winning a decisive victory on November 8th!
The Board of Elections has posted the official results on its web site. Here’s a summary…
Yesterday the Independent Weekly released their much-anticipated endorsement issue. They wrote a pretty good analysis of the race, and we were pleased to see they endorsed Mark!
Thomas, a Carrboro resident, wrote to ask the following question the other day: “Can you tell me more about your position on Carolina North, and how it
is distinct from your opponent’s?” Here are some of my thoughts . . .
You may remember that there was an area boy who was bitten on the Bolin Creek trails a few weeks ago. The owners took off without leaving their names or contact info and consequently the boy had to get a series of painful anti-rabies shots (because it could not be determined whether the dogs rabies vaccinations were up to date). There’s not much we can do about his situation, but there is at least something we can do to prevent future incidents . . .
Mark Barosso has been pulling together some people to resist the establishment of a Wal-Mart at Starpoint on our southern border.
Here are links to three articles about the announcement:
The News, The N&O, and The Herald.
The Chapel Hill News article contains an outrageous misquote, but other than that it is okay. The N&O’s article is the same, but pared down. The Herald-Sun gave the issues the most extensive treatment so I’ll quote the relevant parts:
